Cacti and succulents typically need repotting when they have been in the pot for two to four years, are pot bound, or the compost has broken down and is holding too much moisture.

The best time to repot them is in the spring or early summer.

Potting on

  • First ensure that the plant to be potted has been well-watered
  • Partially fill the pot with SylvaGrow Desert Plant Compost
  • Place the plant in the pot and fill with compost, gently tapping the pot to consolidate the compost. Take care that the growing medium is at about the same level on the plant as previously potted
  • Gently firm the SylvaGrow Desert Plant Compost around the plant without compacting it and water thoroughly
  • For a perfect finishing touch, top the surface with 1 – 1.5 cm layer of Melcourt Horticultural Potting or Coarse Grit

After-care

  • Most cacti and succulents prefer a position in full sunlight and can even spend the summer months outside. For best results check the conditions your particular plant prefers
  • Water thoroughly when the compost is dry, allowing excess water to drain away but ensure that the compost dries out completely between waterings. During the spring and summer cacti and succulents may need watering every 2 – 4 weeks. In the later autumn and winter, watering can be reduced significantly
  • After 4 – 6 weeks, regularly applying a proprietary liquid feed during the spring and summer months, following the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Use in a ventilated place and avoid breathing in dust.
  • Always wear gloves when gardening and wash hands after use.
  • Close bag after use to avoid drying out and to prevent contamination and store in cool dry conditions.
  • White mould: under certain conditions a white mould may appear on the surface of some of the particles in SylvaGrow Desert Plant Compost. This is entirely normal and not harmful to humans, plants or pets.
  • The polythene bag containing the product is strong enough to be re-used, for example, as a hanging basket liner.
  • The SylvaGrow packaging has been manufactured using at least 30% post-consumer waste plastic. We are working with our suppliers to increase this level as quickly as we can. The bag is 100% recyclable but check regionally for local recycling options.
  • Fresh compost is always best. For great results use SylvaGrow within the season of purchase.
