about us

The peat-free pioneers

Proud to be the UK’s leading supplier of peat-free growing media, mulches, soil improvers and landscape products.

The future of gardening is peat-free

When we launched Melcourt in 1983, we were the first company ever to explore the possibilities of more sustainable growing media, long before the impact of harvesting peat for compost production became a serious environmental concern.

Now, as the leading supplier of consistent quality, peat-free growing media, we’ve demonstrated time and time again that when it comes to establishing, growing and maintaining healthy plants, you don’t need peat for performance.

All our products are based on British and European forest and wood processing industry residues with new raw materials systematically researched and tested to ensure the highest quality, using our in-house research and development facilities.

The proof is in the potting

The results of our growing media speak for themselves, with consistently great performance every time, year in year out. Our careful blend of science and nature is why our products are certified or approved by some of the most recognised names in horticulture.

Endorsed by RHS

Melcourt are proud that many of our products are endorsed by The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the UK’s gardening charity, helping people and plants to grow so that we can all live in a happier, healthier world.

Soil Association approved

Many of our growing medium ingredients meet the exacting standards of the UK’s most well-known and influential organic charity, the Soil Association, and we’ve been certified by them since the early 1990s. Look for their logo on our bags.

Responsibly sourced

We are founding members of Responsible Sourcing of Growing Media Scheme and are committed to assessing our products against seven strict enviromental criteria, including water and energy usage, renewability and impact on habitat and biodiversity.

John Innes seal of approval

The SylvaGrow® John Innes range has been inspected and approved by John Innes Manufacturers’ Association (JIMA), ensuring it meets the strict quality standards and giving gardeners confidence in its quality, sustainability, and effectiveness.

Suitable for use by vegans

An increasing proportion of our customers look for vegan-friendly products, so many of our composts are completely free from animal-derived ingredients – look out for the vegan-friendly logo on our bags.

FSC® certification

All eligible Melcourt products are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) indicating that we use bark and wood from sustainably managed sources. FSC® certified products are indicated with the FSC® logo.

We have played a leading role in the creation and ongoing development of The Responsible Sourcing Scheme for Growing Media and virtually all of our eligible products now carry an audited score.

Committed to the highest levels of customer service

We’re not a family-run business but our customers tell us that it feels like one, giving an unusual level of personalised service and support you won’t find anywhere else.
