Catherine Dawson awarded prestigious RHS Veitch Memorial Medal

In recognition of outstanding contributions to horticultural science and sustainability, the prestigious Veitch Memorial Medal has been awarded to Melcourt’s Senior Associate Catherine Dawson, a trailblazer in the field of soil science and a horticultural innovator. With over 30 years of experience in the industry, Dawson’s transformative work has played a key role in revolutionising the development and widespread adoption of peat-free growing media.

Catherine Dawson’s remarkable journey began with a background in soil science and horticulture, and in 1992, she joined Melcourt, a company that would become the epicenter of her groundbreaking research and development efforts. Dawson’s expertise and leadership were instrumental in the creation of Sylvamix and SylvaGrow—two groundbreaking peat-free growing media products that have set new standards in the horticultural industry. These products have been praised for their environmental sustainability, commercial viability, and high performance, and they are now widely used by both professional growers and home gardeners alike.

Peat extraction for use in gardening products has long been a controversial practice due to its negative impact on biodiversity and carbon emissions. Catherine’s vision was to drive the horticultural industry toward high-performance, peat-free alternatives—without compromising on product quality.

“I am incredibly honoured to receive the Veitch Memorial Medal,” said Catherine. “This recognition is a testament to the collective effort of many passionate individuals who share the vision of a more sustainable future for horticulture. Together, we’ve been able to create products that not only perform at the highest level but also contribute to the protection of our planet’s natural resources.”

The Veitch Memorial Medal is awarded annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the science and practice of horticulture. Catherine Dawson’s dedication to sustainability, her leadership in developing peat-free alternatives, and her profound impact on the horticultural community make her a truly deserving recipient of this prestigious award.
